The Department has an international reputation for research and was ranked sixth out of 82 psychology departments in the UK in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.
Its tradition and strengths are in a number of clinically relevant areas (cognitive behavioural theory and therapy, neuropsychology, health and social psychology, vision, language and other basic science areas). Training at Royal Holloway is underpinned by an ethos of public service, that is, we believe that the state (in this case, the NHS) has an important part to play in the wellbeing of individuals and communities.
After becoming co-educational in 1965, the two colleges merged in 1985, to create what is today known as Royal Holloway, University of London.
The College today has around 9,000 students, of which over 2,000 are postgraduate students, studying for degrees in the arts, sciences, humanities and social sciences.
Royal Holloway College was founded by the Victorian entrepreneur and philanthropist Thomas Holloway, and opened by Queen Victoria in 1886.
Thomas Holloway was not the first Victorian visionary to realise the benefits of an education for women. This means our students learn from internationally renowned academics and researchers while also being known by name themselves. We are an innovative and forward-looking institution, acknowledged worldwide for cutting-edge research and excellent teaching. The remainder of time is for private study and research. We are interested in graduate applicants with a good academic record and a minimum 2:1 degree in psychology. The College has a very active and vibrant students’ union, which offers many opportunities for part-time work as well as offering a vast number of clubs and societies.
